Instagram & Facebook Ads: The Beginner's Guide That Converts (2026)

Running ads on Instagram and Facebook in 2026 is both easier and harder than it used to be. Easier because the platform does most of the targeting math for you. Harder because your creative has to earn attention in a crowded feed. Here's the beginner's playbook we use with clients — minus the fluff.
Set up tracking before you spend a single naira
Most beginners burn their first budget on ads they can't measure. Install the Meta Pixel and set up the Conversions API before launching. Without them, the algorithm is flying blind — and so are you.
Pick the right objective
Match your objective to your real goal:
- Leads — use the Leads objective with a native lead form for fast, low-friction capture
- Sales — use Conversions, and make sure your pixel fires on the purchase event
- Brand awareness — use Reach or Engagement only if your funnel is already strong
The biggest beginner mistake is optimising for likes and calling it marketing. Likes don't pay salaries.
Target broadly, sharpen with creative
In 2026, let the algorithm find your audience. Start with a broad audience (country + rough age + maybe one interest), then run a CBO campaign. The platform learns what converts better than your assumptions do. Retargeting — warm audiences who visited your site — does the sharpening later.
Creative is 80% of the result
Same budget, same audience, wildly different results — the difference is usually the ad itself. Stop the scroll with native-looking creatives: real photos, user-generated style content, and short-form video outperform polished stock imagery. Test 3–5 creatives per campaign and let the data pick the winner.
Start small and scale what works
You don't need a million-naira launch. Start with a small daily budget, let the algorithm exit its learning phase (about 50 conversions), and only scale when the metrics are healthy. Scaling too early kills profitable campaigns.
Read the metrics that matter
- CTR — is the creative earning the click? Below 1% means the ad isn't relevant enough.
- CPC — what each click costs; compare against your margin per customer.
- ROAS / cost per lead — the number that actually decides whether you keep the campaign.
If this feels like a lot, that's because it is — which is exactly what we do for clients. We handle strategy, creative, and optimisation so you can focus on the business you're trying to grow.
